An Exploratory Study on Therapeutic Factors of Art
Lee Mo-Young

Kim Eun-Young
Abstract
This study was to pinpoint the therapeutic factors of art through empirical study. For the study, 305 adults in their 20s or older who either have occupations related to art therapy or experience art therapy were surveyed. The data collected through questionnaire survey were examined through the exploratory factor analysis and factors were extracted through main component analysis. Also, t-test and F-test were performed in order to analyze how differently each factor would be regarded among those who have therapist experience and those who have not and based on the degree of therapist experience. According to the analysis of exploratory factors, the pleasure, insight, emotion, thought promotion, and expression were derived as major therapeutic factors. While those who had therapist experience laid importance on the insight factor and thought factor, those who did not have therapist experience considered the pleasure factor as a more important element of art therapy. Regarding the difference due to the therapist experience, the respondents with less experience seemed to lay more importance on the pleasure factor, emotional factor, and expressive factor, respectively. This study is expected to contribute significantly to the systematization of the therapeutic factors of art by determining which element acts more effectively for therapeutic application of art and to the development of art therapy theories by prompting academic discussions about how art brings therapeutic effects.
